Council Member David Downs
Whether he is snapping pictures of wildlife at Arbor Hills Nature Preserve, biking on trails in East Plano, or volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America, Council Member David Downs enjoys an adventure.
David has always sought to discover new things. Born in Monroe, Louisiana, David moved frequently with his family before settling in Plano in 1972. But his desire to discover the world never left him. David traveled to Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand. He even spent his senior year in boarding school in Spain. “We kept going away and back, away and back, and we would always return to Plano” says David. His unique exposure to the world allowed him to see life in a new perspective.
David attended Collin College and the University of Texas at Dallas before graduating from the University of Illinois where he received a B.S. in Finance. After starting a career as a financial advisor for AXA Advisors in Chicago, David made the decision to move back to Plano to be near his family.
Having seen conditions in which the rest of the world lives, David understood that in order to improve quality of life within your city, it is up to the citizens to work together with their local government. “A community maintains its status as a great place to live and raise a family through the efforts of its citizens as well as its elected officials and paid staff. Volunteerism is an honor not a burden; the rewards far outweigh the cost.” says David.
David’s desire to be an active participant in his city has opened up opportunities with many civic and community organizations. He has participated in 27 different organizations as a volunteer, board member, and chair including the Boy Scouts of America Northern Lights District Chair, the Art Centre of Plano Advisory Board and the Collin County Healthcare Foundation Advisory Board.
In 2012, David received the 2012 Distinguished Leadership Award. This award is given to Leadership Plano alumni who display an exceptional commitment to being involved in the community and mentoring future civic leaders. His leadership and desire to help his community propelled him to seek service as a Plano City Council Member. In 2013, David was elected to Place 8 on the Plano City Council. “I’m excited that I can focus on the task of helping guide our community into the future” says David.
David is married to his wife Chris, also an active community volunteer, and has two sons. He is a talented photographer and is an avid cyclist.
