*Get a Library Card*
A library card is required to check out materials, use a computer, and access online resources. Cards are free for Plano residents and residents of the following reciprocal cities: Allen, Frisco, Garland, McKinney, Richardson, The Colony, and Wylie. Residents of all other cities are required to pay $50 for an annual nonresident card.
Proof of address is required when picking up your card and can be verified with a driver's license or other document showing name and current address, for example; lease or purchase agreement, recent public utility bill, insurance card, or voter registration card.
Register online or complete an application at any Plano library. Your card is valid at all five Plano libraries and you will need it each time you visit. If your library card is lost or stolen, please notify Plano Public Library System immediately. Cost of a replacement library card is $1.
If children are under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must sign their application and agree to take responsibility for all materials borrowed on the card.
The loan period for most items is three weeks and borrowing is limited to 50 total items per cardholder. Once the limit is reached, borrowing will not be permitted until the cardholder’s record falls below 50 items.
The following items are limited to a loan period of seven days:
- DVDs (excluding instructional and those with a playing time longer than seven hours)
- Print magazines
- Current Bluebonnet books
- Current tax books
- Easy holiday books
- Science experiment books
- Science Kits
- "Too Hot to Hold" titles (no renewals)
Of the 50 item total, no more than 10 DVDs may be checked out at one time. CDs (music and audiobooks) and MP3s (includes Playaways) may be checked out in any quantity up to the 50 item total limit.
Patrons are responsible for all materials charged to their library card until materials are checked back in.
Hold requests are limited to 20 per card. When placing an item on hold, patrons may select any Plano library for item pickup and will be notified by email or telephone when the item becomes available.
Library Code of Conduct
- DVDs, Theme Boxes, Science Kits & Too Hot to Hold titles - $1 per day
- All other materials - $0.25 per day
- Maximum accrual - $10 per item
Patrons must pay overdue charges when items are returned beyond due dates and pay replacement costs plus a $5 non-refundable processing fee for lost and/or damaged items.
For materials not returned or paid for after 41 days and/or for uncollected fines in excess of $25, payment will be sought by a collection agency. A $10 collection fee will also be assessed.
Sets returned with missing pieces will accrue fines on the patron record until the complete set is returned. If any piece of a set is lost, the patron will be charged the cost of an entire replacement set.
The Library reserves the right to limit checkout privileges until overdue or lost material charges are cleared.
Effective January 13, 2014 - Library cardholders whose accounts are delinquent and have been sent to collections will be blocked from computer access until payment arrangements have been made.
To receive email reminders on your account, contact the library to change your notification method from telephone to email and verify your email address. Email reminder service provides the following for each item checked out:
- Reminder of upcoming due date three days prior
- Overdue reminders at five, 10, and 20 days past due
Materials not on hold for another patron may be renewed online, by telephone or in person up to ten times in general; however, some items are limited to one renewal. The number of allowed renewals is displayed on the Patron Account “Items Out” page.
Materials may be returned to any of the five Plano libraries regardless of where they were checked out. Outside book drops are located on the west side of each library.
Self-checkout machines are available for quick service at all Plano libraries and allow use of a library card or smartphone bar code application to check out materials.
