Stories of identity theft victims have been reported in the news for several years; however, we are seeing a steady increase in the numbers of this type of crime. This is not just happening in Plano, but across the nation. Identity theft can happen to anyone, young, old, rich or poor.
Identity theft involves the use of other person’s name, date of birth, and other identifying factors to commit a crime or to hide their true identity from law enforcement. Unfortunately, using the power of the internet, the theft of someone’s identity is much easier. While it used to take a criminal hours, days or weeks to produce a forged document containing someone’s identifying information, it can now be done literally in seconds. Many counterfeit documents are professional looking, high-quality, counterfeit documents.
If you suspect you have been a victim of identity theft or fraud, contact the Plano Police Department.
