Q: How do I file a complaint? (Noise-welfare-waste-restraint)
A: Information is taken and inputted into a computer system which assigns a case number. An Animal Services Officer (ASO) will respond within 72 hours with the exception of welfare or an animal unrestrained which are completed that day.
The complainant's name, address and phone number are asked. If they are reluctant, we assure them this information is not given out and that it falls under the State of Texas Law section 552.101 of the Government code (protecting the identity of the informer). The problem is written on the complaint, and the address is researched for prior problems and to check on city registration (license) and rabies vaccination.
The assigned ASO will either speak with the owner or leave a door tag. On noise complaints, a letter is written to the owner, and a copy is sent to the complainant. We strongly recommend complainants to complete a noise log. For a second noise complaint, an ASO goes out in person. If the noise continues, an ASO will be dispatched again but if the letter or the ASO does not help alleviate the problem, the complainant is then advised to file a formal complaint with the Municipal Court.
On each call, the ASO will check for current city registration and rabies vaccination. If either is not in compliance, a written warning is issued with a seven day grace period. Failure to comply may result in a citation.

Q: Do you have a ______ for adoption?
A:Most of the animals we have available can be viewed on our Adoptable Pets webpage. On any given day, we will have over a hundred animals in need of a new home. Our selection changes on a daily basis so if you are interested in adopting a pet, we ask that you visit our shelter anytime during our regular hours. We cannot hold animals for potential adopters and all adoptions are done on a first come, first serve basis.
Q: What do I need to do if I have lost/found an animal?
A: If you have a lost pet, we will ask that you come to the shelter and make a lost report. It is the owner’s responsibility to visit the shelter and reclaim any lost pet prior to the expiration of the animal’s hold period.
The Animal Services Division works very hard at getting lost pets back to their owners. If you have found a pet and are willing to care for the animal until the owner can be located, please call us with the following information.
- The date, zip code and major cross streets where the animal was found.
- Breed of animal if known
- Color of animal
- Collar type and type of tags
- Any other characteristics of the animal
- Your name, address and phone numbers. Please state if you give permission to give the possible owner your phone number in order that they can contact you
We also ask that you bring the animal to the shelter so that it can be scanned for a microchip. Please be advised that after five (5) days, you are considered the owner of said found animal and will be responsible to abide by all City Ordinances and State Laws, including rabies vaccination and city license requirements. Finders can also bring the animal to our shelter anytime during our regular adoption hours, or they can request that an Officer pick the animal up from their residence.
Q: How do I give up my animal?
A: Plano residents can bring their unwanted pets to the shelter anytime during our regular hours. A $25.00 fee is required per animal for owner surrenders. Please bring current medical records of the animal if available. In special circumstances, elderly and/or handicapped residents may request an Officer be dispatched to pick up their pets if they are unable to bring them to the shelter themselves.
Q: Do you put animals to sleep?
A: Plano residents can bring their pets to the shelter for euthanasia anytime during our regular hours. The owner will sign an owner request for euthanasia form. We require a $25.00 fee to perform this service. We request that residents bring their animal into the shelter but exceptions can be made for elderly and/or handicapped residents or special circumstances. We do not provide this service on Saturdays or Sundays unless special circumstances require it.
All euthanasia is performed by lethal injection and the remains are then cremated. No "private” cremations are offered. There are companies that will provide private cremation services and will pick up the remains from our shelter after euthanasia.
Q: How do I schedule an appointment to have the animal that I adopted for it’s spay/neuter and/or vaccinations?
A: Currently, the veterinarian on contract is providing this service on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is only offered to animals that have been adopted from the Plano Animal Shelter, City of Plano employees and Animal Rescue Groups. We do not offer this service to the public. Please call (972) 769-4360 to schedule your surgery.
We do host Low Cost Vaccination Clinic, every second Friday of the month from 4:00 to 6:00 that is open to the public.
Q: What do you do about wildlife? (Coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, opossums, squirrels, snakes, etc.)
A: Refer to our Urban Wildlife for more information or visit the DFW Wildlife Coalition’s page.
