Accepted Items

Stick to the Basics: Recycle cans, plastics, mixed papers, cardboard and glass.

The City of Plano accepts the following items for recycling:

Empty, clean and dry. Placed loosely in your recycling cart (no plastic bags).

  • Aluminum, tin and steel cans
  • Chipboard/boxboard (cereal and shoe boxes)
  • Glass jars and bottles
  • Junk mail, mixed office paper, school papers and non-metallic paper gift wrap (larger than a credit card)
  • Newspaper, magazines and catalogs
  • Paper grocery bags
  • Phone books
  • Plastic bottles, jugs and containers stamped 1, 2 and 5 with lids if loosely attached. No Styrofoam, please!
  • Small corrugated cardboard boxes should be emptied (free of plastic, Styrofoam, trash, etc.)

Placed with Yard Trimmings outside your cart:

  • Large cardboard boxes should be emptied (free of plastic, Styrofoam, trash, etc.), flattened and placed out for collection with your yard trimmings

Items NOT accepted in your recycling cart:

  • Landscape trimmings (grass clippings and tree limbs)
  • Soils, sod or root balls
  • Aerosol cans
  • Adult and baby diapers
  • Aluminum foil
  • Batteries
  • CDs / DVDs
  • Ceramics (dishes, drinking glasses and vases)
  • Facial or toilet tissue
  • Light bulbs/fluorescent tubes
  • Metallic and cellophane gift wrap
  • Mirrors
  • Paper towels

  • Plastic containers used for motor oil, antifreeze or other hazardous materials
  • Plastic toys
  • Self-sticking notes (due to the glue)
  • Shredded paper, bagged or not, is not acceptable

  • Trash bags
  • Wax-coated cartons (milk and juice cartons)
  • Wire hangers
  • Clothing or shoes

When in doubt, toss it out.
